Interactive Video Installation
Dutch artist Marnix de Nijs explores the dynamic confrontation between bodies, machines and the media universe. Critical of the modern world, but always with a sense of humor, he creates interactive machines that challenge our perception. Using biometric video analysis software, the Mirror Piece exhibition scrutinizes the facial features of every person who looks at the work and compares it to some 250 individuals contained in a database. The database is made up of various public figures chosen for their infamous or controversial actions. A computerized voice then announces the name of the person with whom the visitor is matched, and a paired image appears in the mirror. This work is a radical reminder that the massive increase in the use of biometric technology in the public sphere should be viewed with healthy skepticism!
